Liver Cancer

Liver cancer can be treated in various ways, depending upon the type of cancer and what stage it has reached, including surgery, various forms of ablation and radio- or chemotherapy. Sometimes a combination of treatments is required.
For information on CyberKnife radiosurgery generally visit the CyberKnife page. For information on CyberKnife treatments for soft tissue tumours including liver cancer visit the CyberKnife soft tissue tumours page.
In recent years a highly flexible but accurately-targeted form of radiation treatment has been developed, which provides non-invasive treatment of certain types of liver cancer. This is CyberKnife® radiosurgery, which differs from radiotherapy in several important ways.
CyberKnife® treatments now extend to the brain, eye, spine, lung, liver, prostate and pancreas with new treatment protocols being developed as the technology is more widely adopted.
Over 100,000 patients worldwide have been treated with this system and it is now being adopted rapidly due to rising demand, as it becomes better known.

Proton therapy for liver cancer
Proton therapy can be applied wherever conventional radiotherapy can be used, but because the radiation is more closely focussed on the tumour(s) it greatly reduces the impact of radiation on sound tissue.  It can also reduce distressing side effects which are often associated with radiotherapy for certain types of cancer.
Liver cancers treated by proton therapy include hepatocellular carcinoma, metastases, cholangiocarcinoma and intrahepatic bile duct carcinoma.

Transplant patients
For some patients awaiting liver transplant, CyberKnife treatment may be used as a temporary treatment, allowing more time to find a suitable donor.
