Psoriasis and Dermatitis
Q.Light® PRO
The treatment regime
Light therapy is applied to clean skin, as the presence of creams or other substances on the surface can scatter or diffuse the light. Creams can then be applied afterwards as normal and uptake is increased.
For dermatologists who want the capability of Q.Light® PRO in an easily portable model, Q.Light® Psoriasis Care can be used on the lightweight folding 'Home' stand (right) and then carried easily to another room or site.

Many sufferers from psoriasis find that their condition eases in summer when exposed to strong sunlight. As a result ultra-violet based light therapies have been available for some time and these work well for some people but not so well for others.
There is another form of phototherapy for psoriasis however that is free from these harmful effects, and that is based on purely visible light frequencies.
Phototherapy is now used for a variety of medical conditions including acute and chronic wounds acute wounds and dermatological applications including psoriasis/ dermatitis and acne. Different conditions benefit from different wavelengths and usually this means buying a separate device for each group of applications, but Q.Light® PRO is a modular system.
There are filter modules for wound care with or without infra-red, psoriasis, acne and even for skin cancer diagnosis and treatment by photodynamic therapy (PDT) using special photosensitising creams - see Photodynamic Therapy page.
The Psoriasis Care filter module provides visible light frequencies only in the range 385-780nm so excluding both ultra-violet and infra-red.
What are the advantages of treating with visible light only?
Without ultra-violet there is no danger of burning or over-dosing. The skin absorbs as much light energy as it needs at the time and any surplus is merely ineffective.
No special eye protection or training is required. Visible light is inherently safe to use and treatment can be given wherever convenient, without restricting entry to other people.
Light therapy works best when applied daily, so a system that allows safe, regular self-treatment at home between visits to the therapist can be very helpful.
Because they can be sold without restriction in most countries, the portable models for specialists are also available to home users and can be sold or rented to patients.
In most cases Q.Light® phototherapy by visible light frequencies can be used alongside existing therapies and when moisturisers are applied after light therapy their take-up is increased, so improving their effectiveness.
Phototherapy has been shown to increase microcirculation in the treated skin and to energise the skin cells, improving own natural repair processes.
Whilst no guarantee of effectiveness for any particular person or condition can be given, Q.Light® Psoriasis Care is likely to assist in most cases and visible light therapy may also make existing treatment regimes more effective.
Elbow before and after treatment
At the maximum diameter of 25cm treatments take 3-4 minutes. Whilst longer than with Q.Light® PRO these are therefore still attractive and convenient. As there is no ultra-violet light and no risk of burning, Q.Light® Psoriasis Care is also certified for sale to the general public. It can therefore be rented to patients for use between consultations or sold outright for long term use.

Of course whilst helping in one way, ultra-violet light can also have damaging effects on the skin. It can be dangerous if too much is applied so it is usually only resorted to in stubborn cases.
Swiss manufacturers have taken the lead in non-laser phototherapy devices and Q.Products AG has the largest range of flexible and specialised devices for hospitals, doctors, therapists and for home users.
Treatment times vary according to the area to be treated, but a 40cm diameter area can be treated in 4 minutes or a 20cm diameter area in just 2 minutes, so treatments are easily fitted into professional consultations. Q.Light® phototherapy is painless so causes no distress to patients.
Steroids may interfere with the body's reaction to light, making phototherapy less effective, but this interference is less marked for dermatological treatments than for others such as joint pain.
Light therapy is best applied daily, or in severe cases several times daily. Longer treatments are ineffective; it is better to treat more frequently than for longer periods.
