University Medical Centre, Hamburg, Germany
Pancreas Clinic
Being a high-volume centre, medical care can be provided with much better outcomes and lower complication rates. In selected groups of patients with pancreatic cancer as many as 40-45% can be cured for five or more years.
Prof Izbicki is Professor of Surgery, Chairman of the Department of General, Visceral and Thoracic Surgery and Clinical Director of the UKE Pancreas Clinic
The UKE Pancreas Clinic's high standard of quality is based on long experience and personal treatment, including sophisticated imaging studies, such as CT scan and MRI, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures like ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). When necessary biopsies can be performed under CT or EUS guidance to detect the origin of unclear masses or tumours.
This interdisciplinary setting allows UKE to cover all possible associated co-morbidities. Depending on the underlying pancreatic disease all types of sophisticated pancreatic procedures can be offered.
The subtle surgical technique allows the patient to get up the next day after the operation. Supported by dedicated nursing staff and specialised physiotherapists, recovery is made as comfortable and effective as possible.

Clinical outcomes
For benign conditions, such as complications of chronic pancreatitis, cystic tumours and pancreatic duct pathology, the survival rate should approach 100%. Whenever possible, organ preserving procedures and/or minimally invasive techniques are preferred, in order to minimise surgical trauma.
Pre and post-operative care for pancreas patients
This program not only offers the whole spectrum of pancreatic procedures, but also extensive pre and post-operative care, e.g. well-attended support groups that are led by the surgeons, physicians, nutritionists and psychologists.
Pancreas research
All patients and their families are supported with translation service, airport shuttle, driver service and many other administrative services provided by the International Office of the UKE.
International patients
UKE experts are much appreciated as speakers at important international congresses and the doctors of the Pancreas Clinic are among the most active researchers in the field of pancreas cancer in the world.
